IN RETROSPECT Karl realized he should have brought a crowbar to the farm. The women of Lewis’s family immediately flew by both Lewis and Jerry and attached themselves to Karl like a trio of barnacles. Lizzie got there first, but Karl had seen her coming and was surprised to find himself bending down to pick her up and give her a proper hug. She really was too sweet for words. Santa definitely needed to pay some extra attention to her this year.

Barb followed close behind, and Karl returned her hug with one arm as Susan caught up with them to give him a kiss on the cheek and nudged her daughter out of the way to get a hug of her own.

“Are you beginning to think we were only invited because we were giving Karl a ride here?” Jerry asked Lewis in a stage whisper that guaranteed everyone else could hear.

“Oh, we love you too, Jer,” Barb said. “But come on, look at him. Who wouldn’t want to hug him?”

“I’ll settle for shaking his hand,” John said dryly from the front door. “Girls, leave the poor guy alone and let the boys come in and sit down already.”

Susan and Barb grumbled a bit as they let him go, and Karl was relieved to be able to move again. He liked Lewis’s family and all—rather more than he expected to—but it was weird having all that affection thrown at him at once. He carefully shifted Lizzie to his back for a piggyback ride, and she let out a small, happy squeal as they headed in.

Dinner smelled heavenly, and Karl’s mouth immediately watered in response. There was definitely turkey cooking, as well as ham, bread of some sort, corn, sweet potatoes, stuffing, green beans, and something cheesy he couldn’t place. And pies, but those he expected. Aside from the obligatory pumpkin, he thought he could smell both apple and blueberry.

“How much food did your mother cook?” he asked Lewis, his voice low.

“Enough for an army, I’m sure,” Lewis whispered back.

“Is this normal?”

Lewis cocked an eyebrow at him and smirked. “Yes and no. I’m quite sure she cooked extra for you. She’ll probably make you take half of the extras home.”

“Why?” Karl asked, a little horrified at the thought. He didn’t need to be eating turkey until Krampusnacht.

Lewis screwed his brows in confusion. “Because she wants to take care of you,” he said, as though it should be obvious. “She’s a mom.”

Karl’s mother had never been like that, but in her defense, she was extremely busy. She had more kids than even Karl could count. He and his brother had just kind of been created and left for the council to deal with. But there was no way Karl could explain his other-than-human upbringing to Lewis, so he just said, “My mom’s not like that.”

Lewis’s expression was suddenly tinged with sadness, and he took Karl’s hand. “Then it’s about time you had someone mother you.”

Before Karl could answer, there was a heavy knock
